A unique subculture of shore fishing has developed on the Weihe River in Xi'an, based on the use of extremely long telescopic rods (30–35 meters long), known as "gun poles." These enormous rods allow access to deep channels where large fish are found.
Anglers use special platforms with counterweights and rollers, reminiscent of artillery gun carriages, and play the fish by quickly folding the rod sections.
