The pickup truck was unveiled in hybrid and fully electric versions.

The eighth-generation Toyota Hilux, which debuted in 2015 and has already undergone three restylings, is preparing for retirement. On Monday, November 10, the Japanese company finally unveiled the model's successor.

On the outside, the new model features a more angular design in the brand's modern style, with narrow headlights that bear some resemblance to the American Tacoma. The company hasn't specified the platform on which the ninth-generation Hilux is based, but the identical 3,085 mm wheelbase and nearly identical dimensions to the previous generation indirectly support speculation that the same underpinnings will be retained, albeit with some refinements.

The Hilux's interior architecture wasn't a surprise. Patent images of its elements, as well as photographs of individual components, have previously been published online. The vehicle features a pair of 12.3-inch screens on the dashboard, but retains a full complement of physical switches, such as the drive mode selector on the center console, the climate control panel, and more.

Perhaps the most significant feature of the ninth-generation Hilux is the debut of a fully electric version. The vehicle is powered by a pair of electric motors with a combined output of 195 hp. The front motor generates 205 Nm of torque, while the rear motor produces 268.6 Nm. They are powered by a 59.2 kWh battery, providing up to 240 km of range on a single charge—not much for 2025. How quickly the energy can be replenished is not specified.

The electric vehicle is promised a payload capacity of 715 kg and the ability to tow up to 1,600 kg, compared to 3,500 kg for gas-powered vehicles.

The company hasn't forgotten about other powertrains either. In certain markets, the vehicle will retain the same 2.7-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine and a 2.8-liter turbodiesel without the electric boost. Countries with stricter environmental requirements will receive a diesel version with a 48-volt starter-generator. The company already uses this system on the Land Cruiser Prado for Europe. Its internal combustion engine produces 204 hp and 500 Nm, while a belt-driven starter-generator can briefly boost output to 16 hp and 65 Nm.

The Hilux range is expected to be expanded in 2028 with a hydrogen-fueled version (FCEV), details of which are currently unknown.

The upgraded Hilux platform includes a switch to electronic power steering, but this new feature is only available in the European market, while other markets will continue to offer hydraulic power steering. The vehicle will also receive a modern suite of driver assistance systems.

The new Hilux will begin appearing in European showrooms as early as December 2025. The first customers will be able to purchase the electric vehicle. Other versions will join the lineup in 2026.
