The Conti Tower near the Colosseum was undergoing restoration.
In the very center of Rome, part of the famous historic Torre dei Conti tower, built in the 13th century, has collapsed, according to the ANSA news agency. The incident occurred on the morning of November 3: passersby heard a loud noise as a section of the structure fell onto the sidewalk.
The street was closed to traffic due to construction work, and no one was nearby at the time, so no one was injured. However, there were workers in the building, and three were pulled from the rubble. Another, a 64-year-old man from Romania, was trapped on the first floor. As rescuers began to free him, a second collapse occurred.
Fortunately, there were no casualties this time either, but the Romanian had to be hospitalized.
However, it is possible that people may remain trapped under the building's rubble.
City civil defense personnel are working at the scene, assessing the extent of the damage and the risk of further collapse. The area around the tower has been completely cordoned off, and further structural inspections will be conducted shortly.
The incident is particularly significant because the Torre dei Conti is one of the symbols of ancient Rome: built nearly 800 years ago, it has survived many disasters, including earthquakes. City authorities promise to take all measures to restore the monument and preserve it for future generations.
The Rome prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the cause of injury through negligence. A technical examination will be conducted to determine the cause of the building's collapse.
