Stones have always been considered silent and even somber, but on the island of Sardinia there's a "Garden of Singing Stones." The town of San Sperate, where the stones sing, is also famous for its beautiful murals, known locally as murals.
Pinuccio Schella made it possible to hear the singing of stones; he believed that stones were not silent. After a special treatment by the Sardinian sculptor, the stones truly acquired a unique sound! To hear it, you need to touch them, and the silent stone will respond.
But San Sperate is famous not only for the "Garden of Singing Stones," but also for its murals, known as murals, which have gained fame far beyond sunny Italy. Strolling through the ancient streets of the commune, these murals are captivating. Created by local artists, they tell the history of this place, the everyday life and way of life of the peasants, political views, and social inequality. The first murals in San Sperate appeared in the 1960s, when visiting performers from Milan painted a picture on the wall of a house as a protest against imperialism.
Local residents supported the idea, and afterward, paintings began appearing on the walls of houses, conveying the moods of the townspeople and their concerns. A little later, murals appeared that had no political connotations, and their subjects depicted the peaceful way of life of the commune.
