A lion rode on the roof of a trailer and escaped (3 photos + 1 video)
In South Africa, a lion climbed through the roof hatch of a trailer and jumped onto the road. A passenger driving on the R49 between Bakerville and Lichtenburg captured the unusual scene.
Veterinarian Anton Nel said the predator was sedated. He was found lying in the grass under a tree. He was unharmed.
After his capture, the lion was placed in a truck.
Nel explained that the lion had climbed the smooth sides of the 2.5-meter-high trailer and squeezed through the hatch. Aside from a broken claw, the escapee was healthy, with no visible fractures.
"These are hardy animals, accustomed to fighting buffalo."
Local media reported that the lion was en route to a game farm in Nietverdinde in the Ramotshere Moiloa region in the northwest of the country.
The lion's new owner, Pats Loots, did not elaborate, but assured that the animal was completely safe and kept in a cage on his property.
The Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation, and Tourism reported that an investigation into the lion's escape was underway.
Earlier this year, a lion escaped from its owners in Lahore and attacked a woman and her children. CCTV footage shows the animal jumping over a wall, then landing on the woman's back, before lunging at the children, aged five and seven. Three of the victims were hospitalized.
The children's father said the lion's owners were amused by the incident and made no effort to restrain the pet. ![]()
