Here you see one of the most picturesque places in the United States – the small island of Mackinac Island, where cars and any motorized vehicles have been banned for over 127 years. Only horses and bicycles are permitted there.

The ban was introduced back in 1898 after complaints from local cabbies, who were unhappy with the appearance of the first cars, which frightened their horses. Ultimately, the ban remained in place in both the 20th and 21st centuries, with exceptions made only for emergency vehicles and snowmobiles in winter.

Currently, the island, which covers 9.78 square kilometers, is home to approximately 600 people: the town of the same name is located there, along with an airport and a port.
