Calhoun's fairytale world, assembled from pebbles (37 photos + 1 video)

This wondrous stone country, tucked away by a creek behind a church in Calhoun, Georgia, is filled with miniature creations.





Here are famous cities, castles, cathedrals, bridges, and even the Roman Colosseum, all in miniature, but rendered with stunning precision and detail.



Garden creator DeWitt "Old Dog" Boyd

More than 50 tiny structures that form the garden are painstakingly constructed from small pebbles, shells, glass fragments, wire, cement, and other scrap materials. A stroll through the garden takes visitors from the Parisian Notre Dame Cathedral with its stained glass windows to majestic castles built from pebbles and shells. Porcelain figures inhabit the interiors and nooks of these structures, and small porcelain animal figurines are scattered throughout the landscape.





The creator of this whimsical garden was DeWitt "Old Dog" Boyd, a parishioner of the local church. A creator by nature, Boyd began creating small fairytale villages for his eight children as a family pastime.



Each time the family moved, he would rebuild a miniature town for them, where each child had their own porcelain character to play with. And in 2007, Boyd began work on a rock garden in Calhoun, explaining, "To keep myself out of trouble, because I'm a real scoundrel."



Today, the rock garden is a family effort, with Boyd himself, his children, and his grandchildren all contributing to its creation. Admission is free. Some of the buildings have religious themes. Incidentally, as of 2016, the garden has hosted 16 weddings, including one between Boyd and his wife, Joyce.



This unique project vividly illustrates the power of creativity, transforming ordinary materials into an entire world where beauty is born from painstaking work and family love.
