1. Dorothy Counts, 1957



In this photograph by Douglas Martin, 15-year-old Dorothy Counts is one of the first black students admitted to Harry Harding High School in North Carolina. On her first day of school, she encountered a hostile crowd of white students.

2. An East German soldier flees from Berlin's eastern sector to the western, 1961





In August 1961, 19-year-old Conrad Schumann was sent to guard the construction of the Berlin Wall. It was then that the border guard decided to flee to West Germany. Photographer Peter Laibing captured the moment of escape, and this image, titled "Leap to Freedom," was inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World program.

3. Starving boy and missionary in Uganda, 1980



This photo by British photojournalist Mike Wells shows a Catholic missionary holding the hand of an emaciated boy in Uganda. The work won the World Press Photo of the Year award and later became a powerful symbol of human suffering. Wells himself admitted that he was ashamed to receive the award for a photograph of people dying of starvation.

4. All of humanity in one photograph, except Michael Collins



During the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the Moon, astronaut Michael Collins captured the lunar module "Eagle" on camera. Earth is visible behind the module. So Collins is the only person not in this famous photo.

5. "Wait for Me, Daddy," 1940



This photograph, which became a symbol of the hardships of war, was taken on October 1, 1940, by Claude P. Detloff. It shows five-year-old Warren "Whitey" Bernard grasping the hand of his father, Private Jack Bernard, as he marches with the British Columbia Regiment in Canada.

6. Eyes Full of Hate, 1933



In 1933, at the League of Nations conference in Geneva, Alfred Eisenstaedt photographed Joseph Goebbels, Germany's Minister of Propaganda. At first, Goebbels posed willingly, but upon learning that the photographer was Jewish, his demeanor changed dramatically. He began to look at Eisenstaedt with undisguised hatred.

7. An orphaned boy after the German bombing of London, 1945



American photographer Tony Frizzell captured an unforgettable photo. A boy sits amid the ruins of his home, destroyed by German air raids in London. Tragically, his family perished. The child survived the war and grew up to become a truck driver.

8. A mother searches for her son, 1947



In 1947, photographer Ernst Haas captured a sad moment at Vienna's South Station. A mother shows a soldier a photograph of her missing son, hoping he will recognize him or provide some information.

9. The "Elephant's Foot" in Chernobyl, 1996



This 1996 photo shows Artur Korneyev, an inspector from Kazakhstan, standing next to the "Elephant's Foot"—a massive, highly radioactive mass of corium and other materials beneath Reactor No. 4 in Chernobyl.

11. Nine Monarchs in One Photograph, 1910



This photograph of the nine crowned heads attending the funeral of Edward VII on May 20, 1910, appears ordinary. But four years later, they became enemies in World War I. Surprisingly, the kings of Greece, Germany, Portugal, and Bulgaria were overthrown, and one of them died.

12. Girls in the Windows



The 1960s photograph "Girls in Windows" was created by Ormond Gigli. He invited 43 brightly dressed women, including his wife, to pose in the windows of a building slated for demolition. Three decades later, Gigli's wife donated the photograph to a gallery, and it became one of his most commercially successful, grossing over $12 million.

13. Sarajevo's Romeo and Juliet, 1993



On May 18, 1993, during the Bosnian War, Boško Brkic, a Serb, and Admira Ismic, a Bosnian Muslim, decided to leave Sarajevo for Grbavica. They had agreed in advance to cross a "neutral bridge," and both sides agreed not to shoot. However, snipers opened fire on the lovers. Boško died instantly, and the wounded Admira embraced him and died instantly.

14. Cologne Cathedral after Allied bombing, 1944



In 1944, during World War II, Cologne was almost completely destroyed by Allied bombing. This photo shows Cologne Cathedral, which survived 14 attacks. The church's tall towers were visible from the air, and pilots used them as landmarks. This explains why the cathedral survived while other buildings did not.

15. Girl in a Cotton Mill, 1906



In 1906, Lewis Hine, an employee of the National Child Labor Committee, took a photograph of Sadie Pfeiffer. She worked in a cotton mill in South Carolina. Day after day, the child, only 4 feet tall, had to handle dangerous machinery.

16. A French woman has her head shaved in public, Montélimar, France, August 29, 1944



After France's liberation from occupation in 1944, more than 20,000 women were accused of "horizontal collaboration." For associating with German soldiers, traitors had their heads shaved.

17. Emperor Hirohito and General MacArthur, 1945



On September 27, 1945, shortly after Japan's surrender in World War II, a photograph of Emperor Hirohito and General Douglas MacArthur caused a stir. This image became a symbol of the end of the war and the beginning of the Allied occupation of Japan.

18. Fidel Castro at the Lincoln Memorial, 1959



After his victory in 1959, Fidel Castro went on a tour of the United States. Soon after this photo of him admiring the statue of Abraham Lincoln in Washington, relations between Cuba and the United States worsened. Tensions increased due to the deployment of Soviet ballistic missiles in Cuba.

19. The "Big Three" at the Tehran Conference, 1943



On November 28, 1943, a conference of the "Big Three" opened in Tehran—Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR Joseph Stalin, US President Franklin Roosevelt, and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. This meeting strengthened the anti-Hitler coalition and was a major step towards victory over Nazism.

20. Lyndon Johnson takes the oath of office aboard Air Force One, 1963



Federal Judge Sarah Hughes administers the oath of office to Lyndon Johnson after the assassination of President Kennedy, November 22, 1963. It was the first and last time in history that a US president took the oath of office aboard an airplane.

21. Repeal of Prohibition in the United States, 1933



This photograph captures the joy and freedom as people raise their glasses to the return of legal alcohol consumption. Surprisingly, even today, there are counties in 10 states where alcohol sales are still prohibited.

22. Lunch atop a skyscraper, 1932



Eleven workers calmly eat lunch on a beam more than 240 meters above the ground. They climbed there without any safety equipment to draw attention to the Rockefeller Center skyscraper in New York City.

23. North Korea, January 18, 2013



This is the first evidence that foreigners were allowed to use mobile phones in North Korea. They were given internet access and the ability to take photographs in authorized areas.

24. The Kiss in Times Square, 1945



Shortly after the Japanese surrender, on August 14, 1945, photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt captured the famous kiss between strangers—a sailor and a dental assistant—in Times Square. This image became a symbol of joy and the end of the war.

25. Tragedy at Sea, 1954



John and Lillian MacDonald stand against the backdrop of the merciless waves that carried away their 19-month-old son. John L. Gaunt immortalized the parents' tragedy and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1955.
