The strangest museum in Europe, which features dioramas with stuffed frogs (5 photos + 1 video)

This museum in Split, Croatia, is ideal for those who appreciate the unusual. Its collection features 507 taxidermied frogs that appear alive and engaged in human activities. Froggyland is located next to the 4th-century palace built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Twenty-one dioramas depict the amphibians in various scenes of everyday life: studying, partying, and working.





Hungarian taxidermist Ferenc Mere assembled the collection between 1910 and 1920. He devised a way to preserve frogs without cutting them. Initially, there were 1,000 specimens, 507 of which have survived to this day.

The museum opened its doors in 1993 and has enjoyed great popularity ever since.



British blogger Joe Leggett shared a video of his visit.

"I'm standing in front of the most unusual museum in Europe. It's dedicated to dead frogs. We paid 13 euros, and that's the first thing we saw. And, as you can tell by the look on my face, I was completely confused."





He continued: "We left after ten minutes because it's terrible. Not funny at all, just sad."

On TripAdvisor, the museum is ranked the 15th best attraction in Split, with 828 reviews. However, travelers have mixed opinions about Froggyland.



"I passed by this place a lot a couple of weeks ago, but I thought it was just a quirky shop selling frog-shaped souvenirs. If I'd known it was a quirky museum, I might have stopped in."

"It's ridiculously stupid, but I loved it," another commenter noted.

"Froggyland is wonderful in its own right. Have a couple of beers and admire the taxidermied frogs in hilarious situations. How often do you get the chance to see that?" concluded a third.
