A Subaru dealership will soon resemble a community center, not a car dealership (5 photos)
Subaru dealerships are getting their first facelift in nearly two decades, and it’s a major change as they will feature a more welcoming and shop-like design. In fact, it looks like a cross between a Bass Pro and a car dealership.
The design is known as the Subaru Connection Hub and was developed in collaboration with ChangeUp. As the name suggests, the automaker wants to transform dealerships into “welcoming spaces that strengthen customer relationships and community connections.”
A new kind of welcome
The changes start on the outside, where dealers will have an “inviting promenade” with stylish columns and outdoor seating areas. This is designed to create an “open, inviting atmosphere that sets a tone of warmth and exploration.”
The dealerships will feature a massive glass facade that is designed to create bright and airy showrooms. The glass also provides views of a “Great Blue Accent Wall,” which will also incorporate a local topographical pattern.
In addition, outdoor green spaces will be created that connect to the showroom and service area. They are planned to house everything from dog parks to family play areas and relaxation areas.
Interior transformation
The biggest changes will be inside, as the revamped locations will look more like stores than traditional car dealerships. A large part of this will be so-called “lifestyle car vignettes” that will showcase Subaru vehicles in real-world scenarios. The possibilities are endless, but the renderings show a model parked on a cliff to simulate off-road driving. In the background is another car with a tent on the roof, reminiscent of a camping trip.
These displays are combined with retail areas offering accessories and gear. The assortment of goods ranges from T-shirts and bags to water bottles and dog toys.
The relaxed atmosphere is enhanced by a “cafeteria with gathering spaces, community tables, comfortable seating and a dynamic digital media wall that highlights the Love Promise initiatives, community stories and brand values”. It is also surrounded by merchandise and looks like a comfortable place to spend time while your car gets its oil changed.
Customer Innovations
To support customers during the purchasing process, dealerships will feature a Customization Zone with a digital table. It will help visitors create the perfect car and learn about accessories. They will also be presented with options that emphasize personalization and ongoing product connections.
It’s a welcome departure from the typical cubicles and desks, and Subaru of America’s vice president of dealer development noted:
“The new Connection Hub reflects where our brand is today and where we’re going, while reinforcing our long-term commitment to customers and communities through the Subaru Love Promise.”
Tim Stallings added:
“This is more than a design refresh – it transforms our dealerships into inviting hubs for customers and communities to connect, collaborate and celebrate what they love about our brand.”
Dealer registration is now open, and the first Subaru Connection Hubs are expected to open in 2026. However, it will likely be some time before the new design becomes widespread.
This transformation of dealerships reflects a general trend in the automotive industry, where physical retail outlets are being reimagined as multi-functional spaces for communication and experiences, rather than simply places to make deals. Subaru, with its strong identity focused on active lifestyles and family values, is particularly well-suited to this approach. The change could help the brand integrate more deeply into its customers' lives, offering not just vehicles but also an associated lifestyle, which could be a key competitive advantage in the face of growing online commerce.
