The new Mercedes GLA: hybrid and electric on one platform
Mercedes-Benz continues to develop the next generation of the GLA compact crossover, which will receive both hybrid and electric versions. Recently, detailed spy photos of the hybrid variant appeared, allowing us to see key design features and technical solutions.
Key facts about the new GLA
Platform and model range
The CLA sedan, introduced by Mercedes in March, is just the first in a series of new compact cars that will go on sale over the next five years. The two crossovers will also be built on the same high-tech MMA platform – the successor to the GLB and the GLA model pictured here.
Hybrid vs. electric: the differences
While the hybrid and electric versions of the GLA share the same basic body structure, the electric model has a blank grille, while the hybrid crossover needs air intakes to cool the engine. Although the grille itself is not visible in the photo, it is likely to be similar to the style recently introduced on the electric 2026 GLC at the Munich Motor Show.
Lighting and design
The headlights of this prototype seem to follow the GLC’s solution: a straight LED strip is located above a star-shaped LED element. However, the taillights look different. They also have star-shaped LEDs, but are surrounded by an LED ring that extends from the C-pillar to the tailgate, perhaps even connecting to the opposite side of the car. This detail, which could act as a brake light, was not visible in the photo of the electric version of the GLA from August, but it is likely that both variants will receive it in production.
Masquerade and real contours
Mercedes engineers use hard pads under the camouflage film on the doors to hide the true contours of the body. There is even an imitation of the contour of the taillights and the protrusion under the rear window. However, when you zoom in on the photo, you can see that the real panel does not have this protrusion, which is logical, since there is no similar element on the GLC.
Technical specifications
The electric GLA is expected in 2026 and, judging by the specifications of the CLA, will receive an 800-volt electrical architecture and power up to 349 hp in the version with two engines and all-wheel drive 350 4Matic. Hybrid versions, which will debut in 2027, will instead be equipped with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, a 1.3 kWh battery, a 48-volt system and an electric motor integrated into an eight-speed gearbox. Front-wheel drive models can develop up to 161 hp, and versions with 4Matic all-wheel drive – up to 188 hp.
The development of the new generation GLA demonstrates Mercedes' strategy of developing different types of powertrains in parallel on one platform. This allows the brand to respond flexibly to demand in different regions where the infrastructure for electric vehicles is not yet sufficiently developed. Using the MMA platform for all compact models also contributes to reducing costs and simplifying production processes, which can have a positive impact on the final price for consumers.
