Finnish sailor builds solar-powered yacht and sails 5,700 km to Ibiza (1 photo + 1 video)
Finnish sailor Lucas Sjeman built an 11-meter solar-powered yacht right in his own shed. He has already sailed the vessel to Ibiza and is now continuing his journey across the Atlantic, sharing updates from his experimental voyage on his blog. 
Sjeman spent around 200 days constructing the boat, named Helios 11, using marine plywood and fiberglass. Solar panels are mounted on the yacht's roof, beneath which he built living quarters complete with an electric stove, a small refrigerator, and a toilet.
Sjeman also equipped Helios 11 with an auxiliary sail to maintain momentum in windy conditions or whenever he needs to conserve battery power. In total, the entire build cost him approximately $30,000.
