Money has no smell: a girl quit her office job and became a sewage worker (12 photos)
Sarah Thompson left her office job for a better-paying career. Now a sewage disposal specialist, she enjoys cleaning industrial tanks, shoveling bird droppings, and other waste. At 28, she's already owned a house.
Sarah dropped out of school at 16 and got a job at a supermarket, then worked in a call center for six years.
In October 2022, she realized she needed a job with more opportunities. Tired of constant financial struggles, she jumped at the offer to train as a sewage disposal specialist. This decision changed her life.
Now the British woman cleans bird droppings from roofs, flushes factory tanks, opens heavy manhole covers, and drives a truck. She had to overcome her fear of spiders. But she's happy.
Sara's new job doubled her income, from £19,000 to £40,000 a year. This allowed her to buy her first home for £350,000.
The Thurrock, Essex, resident shared: "It's the best decision I've ever made. When I was growing up, I didn't have any clear career plans. I never thought I'd be working with rats and waste and getting such satisfaction from it. I always dreamed of being successful and making a lot of money. That plan still stands."
"I loved my 'girly' job, but there were no prospects or opportunities to increase my income. I spent so much time, but earned pennies. This job also helps me maintain my mental health. I'm so busy that I don't have time for unnecessary thoughts; I focus on the important things. When we come to school, the children are happy to see me. I think I'm a good example for them, and that gives me satisfaction."

Her responsibilities also include clearing blockages, sealing pipes, and collecting trash from roofs. Sometimes, the entire team dons protective suits, which she describes as "like full-body condoms," and dives into grease tanks to scrape off clumps.
Sarah says, "I've learned a lot, and I still have a lot to learn. I want women to know they can do any job, even if it's traditionally considered a man's job. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty. I do my hair every morning. I get my nails done at a salon every three weeks. I always carry a nail brush in my bag, and I wear two pairs of gloves. I often have to lift manhole covers, which can weigh as much as I do. And using a jet washer is also incredibly hard work."
"I don't need to go to the gym anymore. My job keeps me in shape. Before, I rarely drove, only to get to work. Now I'm confident driving all types of transport. It's incredible."
"I admit, removing limescale from urinals is the hardest task. It really does sting my eyes."
