A snowstorm on Everest stranded a thousand tourists

Tibetan rescuers are doing everything possible to evacuate hikers from the mountain before they die of hypothermia.

Nearly a thousand tourists and local residents were trapped on the Tibetan side of Everest's eastern slope due to a powerful snowstorm that struck the region on the evening of October 3 and continued throughout the following day, according to Sanxiang Metropolis Daily. According to Chinese media, the storm caught hikers at an altitude of over 4,900 meters, and many were unable to descend icy and snow-covered routes. Visibility was reduced to less than one meter in places, forcing some hikers to take shelter in tents.

Volunteers, rescuers, and professional guides quickly rushed to the rescue, but weather, communication disruptions, and the inability to use helicopters significantly complicated the evacuation. According to Reuters, approximately 350 people were safely evacuated from the mountain, and rescuers have established contact with over 200 more tourists and are preparing an organized descent.

Some climbers were able to reach safer areas on their own. In some cases, people suffered frostbite and hypothermia, but according to official reports, there have been no confirmed fatalities. Work is ongoing and is complicated by the forecast for continued severe weather for the next two days. Authorities have closed Everest Park to visitors and suspended ticket sales. Tourists are advised to avoid the region and follow official announcements.
