Every year, the largest aggregation of sea turtles on Earth gathers on the beaches of Costa Rica. Thousands, sometimes hundreds of thousands, of sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Afterward, they retreat to the ocean, unconcerned about the fate of their offspring.
The female digs a hole in the sand, lays her eggs, covers them, and returns to the sea, never returning to the nest.
This unusual event, known as the arribada (Spanish for "arrival"), typically lasts about five days. The main sites where the turtles arrive are in Ostional and Naranjo.
