Every August, eastern Spain hosts a ham-throwing festival, where participants compete to see who can throw a cured ham the farthest. The tradition has been going on for decades and has become a signature event for the village of Carrascosa de la Sierra.
Carrascosa de la Sierra has a population of just 70, but every summer the population swells to 400 people who come to see the festival known as the Campeonato de Lanzamiento de Pernil (Ham Throwing Championship).
In 1997, friends came up with a fun sport at a local bar. It has since become popular.
To prevent the meat from going to waste, it is securely packed in protective film, and players say that after throwing it becomes even more tender.
The winner gets a ham as a trophy. But the most important thing is to share it with locals and guests. Everyone should get their portion of the Spanish delicacy.

There are other categories at the championship: women throw pork shoulder, children throw salchichon, and toddlers throw fuet sausages.

This year's champion among men was Sergio Garcia. His throw reached an impressive 20.55 meters.
24-year-old Thalia Benedicto shared a video from the event, and it went viral on social media.
"The locals are very happy because we added Carrascosa to the map," she told local media.
