A racing Jaguar D-Type from the 1950s is expected to sell for $7.7 million (36 photos)
In November, an extremely rare 1956 Jaguar D-Type sports car will be put up for sale at an auction in Zurich. Broad Arrow Auction House notes that although the D-Type was originally designed for racing tracks, this particular example has never participated in a race. In addition, it has belonged to the same owner, a Swiss collector, since 1994. The rarity is expected to fetch between $6.5 and $7.7 million. 
According to various estimates, in the mid-1950s, a total of 71 to 75 D-Types of various versions were produced, including 18 cars for the factory team. These sports cars won Le Mans for three years in a row, from 1955 to 1957.
The car that will be put up for sale was one of the last to be produced — it was handed over to its first owner in October 1957. Not planning to participate in races, he converted the D-Type for public roads, supplementing the roadster design, for example, with a full-fledged passenger door and windshield. However, in the 1970s, the car was returned to its original condition.
In the early 2000s, the original 3.8-liter engine was removed from the roadster, replacing it with an alternative one - in order to keep the engine in a condition as close to the factory one as possible. In 2005, the engine was completely overhauled, and as part of the preparation of the rarity for the current auction, it was installed in place.
Auctioneers claim that the originality of the sports car is confirmed by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage certificate, and the car is officially allowed to participate in historical events of the highest rank.
