Chipmunks Chip and Dale first appeared on screen in the 1943 short film "Private Pluto", and then appeared in two dozen more cartoons. Before their own series, the chipmunk friends were mostly busy annoying Donald Duck and Pluto the dog. The images of the other members of the Rescue Rangers team (Gadget, Monterey Jack, and Zipper) were created specifically for the series.

The names of the main characters Chip and Dale are inspired by the surname of the famous English furniture maker Thomas Chippendale, who lived in the 18th century and thanks to whom the "Chippendale" furniture style appeared.

The series premiered on January 1, 1991. The TV series was the second after "Duck Tales". A total of 52 episodes were shown. In 2004, the Nevafilm company added voiceovers to the remaining 13 episodes.

Despite the high ratings of the series, only 65 episodes were filmed, which was standard for those years. Although, in "Duck Tales" there were 100 episodes, and in "Darkwing Duck" - 91 episodes.

The music for the opening song was written by American composer Mark Muller, who also created the main theme for "Duck Tales". When it premiered in 1991, the song was initially in the original without translation. Then, starting with episode 30, a version by Valery Pankov ("Chip-Chip-Chip-Chip and Dale are in a hurry") appeared, who also sang the opening songs for other Disney cartoons. And in the last 5 episodes, viewers could hear a rare version by Nikolai Parfenyuk ("Chip-Chip-Chip-Chip and Dale's Sharp Eye"), which was not used in reruns on ORT and STS. In 2004, a third version of the song ("Chip-Chip-Chip-Chip and Dale will help us") was recorded at the Nevafilm studio with vocals by Andrey Kuznetsov.

The opening song has two arrangements - with classical musical instruments (Season 1 in the USA) and synthesizer (Seasons 2-3 in the USA). The first two versions of the opening use a classical backing track, and the third from Nevafilm uses a synthesizer.

Our translators did not change the names of Chip and Dale, although in some countries they were called Tick and Tack, Chip and Chap, etc. But the other members of the Rescue Squad sound different in the original. So, Gadget Hackwrench/ Gadget Hackwrench (English "device + wrench") became Gadget, and Zipper/ Zipper (English "lightning") - Zipper. The cheese-obsessed Monterey Jack/ Monterey Jack, abbreviated Monty (after a popular type of cheese in the USA) became Roquefort (Rocky) in our country - the translators thought that this type of cheese was more familiar to Soviet children.

Many viewers got the impression that Chip and Dale were brothers, but the creators of the cartoon explained that they were just best friends who had known each other since childhood.

After the series was shown, a huge fan club of Gadget lovers appeared in our country and all over the world. Fans have drawn thousands of fan art with the anthropomorphic mouse-inventor and written hundreds of poems and stories dedicated to the heroine, and staged cosplays. Many of our schoolchildren in the 90s were secretly in love with Gadget, and at corporate and theme parties, mouse-mechanic costumes are still in fashion.

For some unknown reason, the role of Gadget in different episodes was alternately voiced by two actresses - Natalya Gurzo and Raisa Mukhametshina, while Raisa Minigatovna's voice was also spoken by Vzhik, and Natalya Sergeevna's voice was given to some secondary characters, such as Lavaini. Roquefort was voiced by Vsevolod Abdulov, and in several episodes (for example, "My Friend is a Bat") he speaks with the voice of Viktor Petrov. Chip's voice belongs to Natalia Zashchipina, and Dale's to Alexander Lenkov.

Based on the series, the video games Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers I and II were released in 1990 and 1993 for the Dendy console. Also in 1990, the game Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers: The Adventures in Nimnul's Castle was released for the PC under MS-DOS. There was also an unofficial game Chip 'n Dale 3 for the NES, which was a hacked version of the game Heavy Barrel with the main characters replaced by chipmunks.

While it is never stated what city the Rescue Rangers live in, a number of scenes with views of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge, a large cargo port, and Chinatown hint that this is San Francisco.

In 2022, a full-length film was released - a reimagining of the TV series, which shows the life of the Rescue Rangers team 30 years after the end of filming of the animated series. According to the film, Gadget ignored the courtship of the chipmunks and married Zipper, to the general discontent of fans.
