A resident of Argentina sued Google for 12 thousand dollars because a photo of his naked butt got into Google Maps (2 photos)
A Google Maps car took a naked photo of an Argentine police officer from behind in his front yard. The photo went viral on local social media and was mocked by colleagues and neighbors.
An Argentine police officer has been awarded nearly $12,500 in damages after a Google Street View car accidentally took a photo of his naked buttocks and posted it on Google Maps. A court ruled that the incident violated the man's privacy and damaged his dignity.
The court initially denied the man compensation, stating that he was to blame for the incident, as he was “walking around the garden in an inappropriate manner” and had no grounds to demand damages.
However, the appeals court sided with the plaintiff, recognizing that the photo violated his right to privacy. The ruling emphasized that the man’s photo “was not taken in a public place, but on the territory of a private house, behind a fence that exceeded the average height.”
The man also stated that during the incident, his house number and street name were shown on Argentine television and widely distributed on social media. According to the plaintiff, this caused ridicule at work and among neighbors.
The court noted that Google usually blurs faces and license plates in Street View images. Despite this, the company did not apply similar protection to the image of a naked person. The ruling emphasizes that such disregard for privacy standards is unacceptable.
