Smartphones under lock and key: Scottish school experiment
Students place their smartphones in special magnetic cases that lock with a lock every morning. These cases, developed by the American company Yondr, remain with the students throughout the day, but can only be opened at special unlocking stations installed on the walls at the entrance to the school, at the end of the school day or during lunch.
The system allows them to keep their phones with them, reducing the risk of theft or loss, but excludes their use during lessons. The policy was introduced after nine months of discussions with parents, students and teachers, with 86% of parents supporting the initiative.
The goal is to improve concentration in lessons, reduce distractions from notifications and social media, and improve the mental well-being of students through more face-to-face interactions.
