The most powerful Ferrari F40 may also become the most expensive (33 photos)

Auction house RM Sotheby’s will put up a remarkable example of the iconic Ferrari F40 for open auction in mid-August. It is expected to fetch between $8.5 million and $9.5 million, and if the auctioneers’ expectations are met, this supercar will become the most expensive F40 in history. The fact is that the car was released in a very rare F40 LM specification, which provides for the most powerful power unit of those ever installed on this model.





The auctioneers attribute the idea of using the Ferrari F40 for racing not to the company itself, but to one of the brand’s French dealers. The head of Charles Pozzi, Daniel Marin, asked the famous racing engineer Giuliano Michelotto to evaluate the potential of the platform, and he designed a whole package of modifications for the F40. This included a step increase in engine power. Since Michelotto had repeatedly collaborated with Ferrari, the program was eventually approved in Maranello. As a result, the alliance released 19 cars prepared taking into account the regulations of the IMSA and FIA GT racing series.

The Ferrari F40 LM retained the standard 2.9-liter V8, but if from the factory it developed 478 hp, then Michelotto found a way to increase its output first to 720, and then to 760 hp. In parallel, the chassis was redesigned, the brakes were strengthened, the aerodynamics were improved and the body was made lighter. They managed to "shave off" about 300 kg - the weight of the Ferrari F40 LM fluctuates around the one-ton mark.

This particular example, the 14th in a row, was assembled in December 1992. It was intended for a private owner and did not participate in major races, although it was noted in many club events and exhibitions. In 2009, the car received a certificate of authenticity from Ferrari Classiche, and in 2014 it was completely restored by Giuliano Michelotto himself. It is claimed that the car is suitable not only for a museum or a thematic collection, but also for full-fledged use on race tracks.
