The oldest Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa from 1948 is to be sold for 7.5 million euros (26 photos)

The Broad Arrows auction will feature a remarkable Ferrari 166 Spyder Corsa: the car was produced in 1948 and is considered the oldest existing Ferrari owned by private racers. Given its status and the highest degree of preservation, the spider is expected to fetch between 5.5 and 7.5 million euros.





The 166 was only the third model in Ferrari's history and is believed to be the first dual-purpose model, approved for both racing and road use. One of the first owners of the Ferrari 166 was Soave Besana from Lombardy - he purchased a 166 chassis with a Spyder body by the Ansaloni studio.

The design of the sports car combines a tubular chassis with a suspension on semi-elliptical springs, and the index reflects the volume of each engine cylinder in cubic centimeters. The Ferrari 166 was equipped with a V12 designed by Gioachino Colombo, increased to 1995 "cubes" from the original one and a half liters that the engine had a year earlier.

This Ferrari, under the control of its first owner, repeatedly participated in various races in Italy, including the famous Targa Florio and Mille Miglia, but never reached first place. Soave Besana parted with the car in 1949, but the sports car was entered into competitions until 1957.

From 1965 to 2015, the Ferrari 166 belonged to one family, and since 2015 it has been part of one of the most famous collections of the Italian brand in the United States. The auction house does not name the owner, but specifies that the car is distinguished by a rare level of originality. It is certified by a Ferrari Classiche certificate: the spider still has the factory engine and five-speed gearbox, and the chassis and body are also preserved. It is specifically stipulated that, although the rarity has changed many owners, the car is being put up for open auction for the first time.
