Frane Selak: a man whom even death was afraid to touch (5 photos + 1 video)
Some people fall into water and drown. Others get into car accidents and die. But there is one man whose biography reads like a movie script that Tarantino himself would turn down, considering it too much.
This is Frane Selak, a Croatian music teacher. Officially, he is the unluckiest man in history. And unofficially, he is the favorite of a universe that lacked a character of the level of “it can’t happen again?!”
Here is just a short list of his encounters with fate:
1962. Train vs. River.
A routine trip through the Croatian countryside ended with the train derailing and diving into the river. 17 people died. And Frane swam out with a broken arm and hypothermia. Apparently, he had a swimming past.
1963. A plane and a haystack.
A year later, he decided to try flying. A bad idea: at altitude, the door suddenly opened, and Frane flew out. The plane crashed, 19 dead. Selak fell... onto a haystack. Because where else would he fall?
1966. A bus in a river. Again.
The bus leaves the road and falls into the water. Four passengers die. Frane emerges as if nothing had happened. It seemed that the rivers in Croatia already recognized his face.
1970. The car is on fire.
His car suddenly catches fire while moving. He manages to jump out seconds before the explosion. Hollywood nervously smokes.
1973. New year - new car - new fire.
This time, the engine burst into flames due to an oil leak. Flames burst through the vents, singeing Selak's hair. Only his hair. Because the body, apparently, is hardened by previous lives.
1995. A bus decides to take revenge.
Frane gets hit by a bus. The result? A bruise. Probably on the bus.
1996. A truck, a cliff, a tree and... of course, he's alive.
A truck suddenly pulls out in front of him on a mountain road. Dodging, Selak flies off the road. The car falls off a 100-meter cliff and turns into scrap metal. But Frane wasn't wearing a seat belt, and he was thrown out... right into a saving tree. Naturally.
And finally, 2003. Bonus level.
The Universe decided: enough is enough and sent Selak a lottery win - a million dollars. Because if you've survived unthinkable situations seven times, it would be nice to improve your bank account.
Frane lived a long life, was married twice, loved music and happily gave interviews to journalists in the style of "but I just wanted to get home."
In the 2010s, he donated most of his winnings to relatives and charity. Because why would you need a million if you've already proven that you can survive anywhere - even in a horror movie that reality itself wrote specifically for you?
