The Italian dancer of Egyptian descent is accused of using seduction techniques and undermining public morals. Sohila Tarek Hassan Haggag was detained at Cairo International Airport on June 22.
The case against Haggag, known as Linda Martino, was opened after videos were posted on social media. In these recordings, the dancer appears in revealing outfits and says that she is not easy to handle.
Investigators believe that she was dressed inappropriately, openly showing her body. The Cairo prosecutor's office accused Haggag of using seduction techniques and provocative dancing, as well as inciting debauchery. When she was detained, a large sum of money was found on her.
The Italian Embassy in Cairo is seeking her release. It is expected that Haggag will spend at least another two weeks in prison.
Sohila was born in Egypt, and several years ago she married an Italian, but returned to her homeland, where she made a successful career.
In recent years, the Egyptian authorities have been actively fighting against activities that they consider questionable from a moral point of view. During the presidency of Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, five dancers were jailed on charges similar to those brought against Haggag.
