California in the 1960s: Old School Skaters, Beach Life, and the Founders of Hardcore Punk







Glenn "Spot" Lockett was known as a legendary hardcore punk producer and engineer who worked with bands such as The Misfits, Black Flag, Minutemen and many others. But as you can see from the photographs, there was another side to his creative talent all along. These pictures from the late 1960s and early 1980s paint a wonderful picture of their time, place and style.

In 1969, Spot became seriously interested in photography. He was inspired by black and white pictures from LIFE magazine, and when he got a Pentax, he became inseparable from his camera, began writing articles on music for the local newspaper Easy Reader, and also took pictures. He published his old pictures in the book “Sounds of Two Eyes Opening”. They captured life as the author saw it in Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and other cities in Southern California. These shots include girls in bikinis, rollerblading, guys on skateboards, surfers, punks, police officers, fans of the musicians, shots from rehearsals and performances of the founders of hardcore punk. As Spot wrote in the introduction to the book, “either you were there or you weren’t there.” And he wasn’t just “there” – on stage, backstage, in the thick of things – he also kept both eyes wide open.

The photographs are varied in their subject matter, but they are all marked in their own way by the expressive, vibrant energy of youth.
