Nine bar staff have been arrested in Thailand for attacking a British tourist. On Wednesday, a 26-year-old customer was overcharged 20,000 baht for drinks at the Diamond Karaoke Bar in Chiang Mai. The angry customer refused to pay and left the establishment. When he went outside to catch a taxi, the bar staff attacked him.

The footage shows staff trying to rip the British man's shirt off at the entrance to the bar. Several people hold him by the arms and legs, while others hit him. The man can be heard hoarsely saying: “I will pay in cash. I swear. I will pay in cash.”

Police Colonel Pratchai Thisala said: “The British tourist was travelling alone. Initial medical examination showed that he only suffered minor injuries and no fractures. There are many eyewitness reports and evidence. CCTV footage shows that the argument broke out in a bar. The foreigner wanted to go back to his accommodation first and offered to talk later, but the other party did not agree. The conflict escalated into a fight in the street.”

Police arrested eight people: Teerasak Rattanabuntawi, 24, Siladol Charoenchai, 20, Naruong Muanchan, 28, Apirchart Kiatnet, 22, Adisarn Surin, 22, Sakda Tawong, 22, Santi Khamnang, 18, and Somsri Armo, 28. A ninth suspect, Worapoi Sukittikul, 23, surrendered the following day.

The suspects were charged with assault, illegal operation of an entertainment establishment and selling alcohol outside business hours. The bar was closed following the incident.

One social media user has warned people against visiting the establishment after his friends were robbed.

"As a Thai, I feel ashamed and sorry for what happened," he wrote, warning people to "be careful" when visiting bars.

The police often visited the establishment due to conflicts between staff and customers. Most of the customers were tourists brought by taxi drivers, to whom the bar paid a commission.

Overpricing and hidden fees have become common practice in tourist centers of Thailand.
