The incident took place at the Avenda Artur Paisão stadium in the Vila Ligia district. The referee, Ederson Carlos da Silva, was arrested in the midst of the match by police officers who ran onto the field with weapons and wearing bulletproof vests.
According to investigators, da Silva is suspected of being involved in a large drug trafficking network that distributed cocaine throughout Sao Paulo. According to the head of the anti-drug police, Eduardo Camargo Lima, it was the detainee who was responsible for the logistics of storing drugs for this organized crime group.
