In 2014, shortly before their wedding, Li Mei was in a car accident, suffering serious brain injuries. Doctors gave little hope for recovery, predicting a vegetative state. However, thanks to the dedication of her fiancé Shen Lan, Li woke up three months later.

Shen spent all their savings on Li's treatment, often skimping on food, and his parents sold livestock and borrowed money from relatives to pay for the treatment, which cost $700 a day. They also received help from the public after media reports.

In 2015, the couple moved to a nursing home, where Li received free rehabilitation and Shen worked as a nurse's assistant. He gave up on finding another woman and having a child, fearing for his wife's health. Now, ten years later, Shen and Li live in the same place. Shen cares for his wife like a child, teaching her to talk and playing with her.
