A 10-year-old boy was paddleboarding with friends in the sea when Typhoon Wutip hit Hainan Province. The boy was swept out to sea by a strong storm. He drifted on his board for about five hours before being spotted by a rescue ship from Guangzhou.
This is the first typhoon in the South China Sea this year. It formed on June 9, strengthened into a severe storm by June 13, and hit Hainan with winds of up to 60 knots (110 km/h), causing waves of 3-5 m.
