The US wants to ban Pirelli tires due to a threat to national security (1 photo)
US authorities have warned Pirelli management that their new development may be banned from sale in the United States. Tires with Cyber Tire technology are capable of collecting information from built-in sensors. According to Bloomberg, the US Commerce Department's Bureau of Security is concerned about potential cybersecurity threats, since one of Pirelli's largest investors is from China.
Pirelli announced last summer that it had begun equipping production cars with high-tech tires. The first to receive them was the Pagani Utopia supercar. Such tires are equipped with a set of sensors that can collect information about road conditions in real time and transmit it to the car, whose on-board electronics quickly reconfigure the systems in accordance with the incoming data.
The US plan to counter potentially dangerous Chinese technologies became known at the beginning of the year. The ban on the use of software from China will be introduced in the country in 2027, and on hardware - in 2029. US authorities are concerned that high-tech cars can collect sensitive information during operation and transmit it to China. Meanwhile, 37% of Pirelli belongs to the Chinese state-owned Sinochem group.
Most likely, the developer will have to obtain a special permit to sell "cyber tires" in the US. According to Reuters, the United States accounts for up to 25% of Pirelli's sales, and the company's management is already discussing possible measures to continue developing business in this country with investors and shareholders.
