Rare tornado with a speed of 178 km/h leaves thousands of Chileans without electricity (6 photos + 2 videos)
The tornado hit the city of Puerto Varas at around 3:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, packing winds of 138-178 kilometers per hour. The storm caused moderate damage, including damage to roofs, cars, and kiosks, broken windows, and doors torn off their hinges.
According to the National Disaster Prevention and Elimination Service, by 15:30, eight people were injured, about 30 houses and one supermarket were damaged.
Journalist Salvador Schwartzman reported on the X platform: "In Puerto Varas, five people were injured, and ten thousand were left without power. Thirty houses were damaged, power lines and trees were knocked down, many roofs were torn off due to the hurricane with wind gusts of up to 170 km/ h."
He continued to share news. In his messages, there were images of destroyed supermarkets. He also posted a video of smashed cars and houses in the city.
The meteorological agency MeteoChile warned of the impending danger. Residents were advised not to take unnecessary risks: "Anomalous weather phenomena are expected that could pose a serious threat to the lives and health of people. Follow the news and follow the instructions of the authorities. Be prepared for emergencies."

The videos show the vortex lifting tree branches into the air, and power lines are torn and scattered. The pictures show significant damage to public buildings. Gas stations were destroyed, many apartments were damaged.

Nicknamed the "city of roses," Puerto Varas is known for its German architecture and is popular with tourists.
