Not All Is Lost - GM Will Invest Hundreds of Millions of Dollars in New V8 Engines (2 photos)

General Motors has officially announced a huge investment in the development of the next generation of 8-cylinder engines. $888 million will be spent, and this is only for the modernization of one engine plant. The assembly of the new V8 is planned to begin in 2027.





The funds are allocated to improve production processes at the Tonawanda Propulsion plant in New York State. These funds are planned to install new machines, manufacture various equipment and replace other tools, as well as rebuild the plant's premises. The concern called this plan the largest one-time investment in an engine plant.

Earlier, General Motors had already allocated a similar amount for the same purposes, but in several tranches: $579 million will be allocated to a similar assembly plant in Michigan, and amounts from $12 to $200 million will be invested in modernizing the production of components for new engines.



At the same time, the concern has not yet specified what exactly the new V8s will be. It is only known that the engines are planned to be more powerful and economical than the current ones. The current, fifth generation of the concern's "small blocks" has a volume of 5.3 to 6.2 liters and can develop up to 682 horsepower, depending on the volume and the presence of supercharging.

The engines are being developed specifically for the lines of large pickups and SUVs, which are produced under different brands of the concern, for example, Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Yukon. The American press does not rule out that the fresh V8 will be used as a component of hybrid installations, but the gigantic investments in the launch of new internal combustion engines clearly demonstrate that General Motors is not too confident in the prospects of universal electrification.
