A man drove a car for 28 years without a license, insurance and technical inspection: what he told the police (2 photos)
The man admitted that he had not received a new driver's license after it was cancelled 28 years ago. How the driver managed to avoid inspection for so long remains a mystery.
In Rhone, France, traffic police detained a driver who, as it turned out, had been driving a car for more than 28 years without a valid driver's license or insurance. This happened during a stop in the city of Tarare, when the car's license plates aroused the police's suspicions due to an expired technical inspection.
However, the most interesting thing began after a standard document check. According to the gendarmerie, the car was not insured, and the driver's license had been cancelled since 1997. At that time, the man was banned from driving after he was caught driving under the influence of alcohol.
Surprisingly, the offender did not show the slightest excitement. On the contrary, he admitted with a slight grin that he had not applied for the restoration of his documents since then, comparing his old license to "expired, but still edible yogurt."
"First, the file check showed that the vehicle was not insured. But then it was time to check the validity of the driver's license. And then: surprise! The culmination of the show was the driver's license check: the man had been driving without a license since... 1997," a Tarara police spokesman wrote on his Facebook page*.
How the driver managed to avoid inspection for so long remains a mystery. For almost three decades without documents, he was not held accountable, and this raises many questions both for the offender himself and for the control system.
The car was confiscated on the spot. The offender faces several administrative and possibly criminal penalties: for driving without a license, lack of insurance and technical inspection. In addition, he faces a trial. The police sarcastically noted that "the only reward" for him will be a symbolic medal for persistence in recklessness.
