A Dog Chapel Is a Place of Spiritual Connection Between Dogs and People (17 photos)

In 1998, artist and children's writer Steven Haneke experienced a tragedy, and then something he called a miracle.





After clinical death, he came back to life with a new mission:



After surviving respiratory arrest, he realized how important it is to appreciate simple joys.

Inspired by the love of his wife and the devotion of his three dogs, he conceived an unusual project.

"I want to build a chapel for everyone - people and dogs, any breed and religion," said Stephen.





So on the top of Dog Mountain, located on his farm in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, there appeared a unique temple without dogmas, but with a winged Labrador on the spire.

As you enter the chapel, you are literally bathed in light from the stained glass windows, which depict dogs decorated with wood carvings. The interior walls are covered with handwritten notes and photographs of dogs and other animals that have passed away, and tables are lined with treats for visitors.

There are various sculptures of dogs around Dog Mountain, and a sign in front of the chapel reads: "All faiths, all breeds welcome. No dogma allowed."



After the tragic death of Stephen (2010) and his wife Gwen (2013), the chapel was preserved by the staff. Today, it is a free place of power for everyone who believes in a special connection with pets and a living museum of touching human-canine understanding.
