A reserve employee walked 85 kilometers in a curlew costume (3 photos)
To raise awareness of the endangered bird species, Matt Trevelyan, a staff member at Nidderdale Nature Reserve in Yorkshire, walked 85 kilometres dressed as a curlew.
A former puppeteer, he put together the costume himself in three days from split bamboo, muslin and polystyrene, even including a viewing hole in the neck so he could see where he was going.
Trevelyan timed the event to coincide with World Curlew Day. According to him, in order to preserve the population, each pair of these birds should hatch at least one chick every two years. But due to predators and changes in agriculture, this almost never happens. Walking in the image of an endangered species became a great way to remind people that sometimes saving nature requires not only scientific reports, but also a little creativity and stubbornness.
