In Japan, they hold wood planing competitions. The goal of the competition is to get the thinnest continuous layer possible in one pass of the plane.
Usually, Japanese cypress or sugi wood is used for competitions (due to their uniform structure), and the shavings are several times thinner than a human hair.
The prizes for the winners are often symbolic, and the main reward is respect from other craftsmen.
