Lottery Despair: Chinese Demand Winnings on Ancestors’ Graves (5 pics)

17 April 2025

Lotteries are currently at the peak of popularity in China. And all kinds of them, for example, streamer ones, where the streamer gets donations just for opening one of the closed balls with gifts. They don’t even play themselves, but pay to watch someone else open gachi balls!

Many young Chinese actually take the lottery as a business plan for life

But the most popular lottery among young people in China now is in the form of scratch cards, where you can scratch off the coating and immediately see your winnings. They are cheap, give a quick dopamine, and also a little hope. Last year alone, the income from such lotteries amounted to 119 billion yuan (16 billion dollars). In one year, sales have doubled! It's all about tradition, the Chinese tend to believe that if you honor your family and ancestors, they will help you and send you luck from the afterlife. And recently, this superstition has received maximum confirmation.

Ha, ha, dad, mom, son - all vigorously rub

A 25-year-old Chinese man from Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region bought 60 lottery scratch cards for 600 yuan and took them to his ancestors' graves during the recent Ancestral Festival. Thinking that the ancestors would bless him, he scratched all 60 cards at their graves. And he won! He started with a winning of 4,000 yuan. But as soon as he realized that he had won, he jumped up and paid four more bows to his ancestors. And then he continued to scratch the same card and won a total of 10,000 yuan.

The same lucky guy who was helped by his ancestors

When he posted this news online, the youth decided to try their luck in the same way! It was just Grave Cleaning Day (something like the Chinese Parental Sunday), when the whole family gathers to clean the graves of relatives, bring them offerings, incense and roast pork. And many young Chinese took lottery scratch tickets with them to the family grave to ask for blessings from their ancestors. To show their honesty, that they came not only for the benefit, some young people take their favorite food, for example, milk tea, to the graves of their ancestors. They supposedly brought gifts, but what about the lottery tickets? Well, it just fell into the bag.

The design of these lotteries, of course, is MAXIMUM Chinese - red with gold

Of course, not all ancestors were able to help their descendants in this way. Posts on social networks about zero winnings and disappointment poured in. They even started saying that young people are too demanding of their ancestors for some reason. But this again reveals the problem that young Chinese are now disappointed in life and the economy due to high unemployment and apartment prices. So they start thinking that they have a better chance of winning the lottery than earning everything on their own.

In China, it is customary to collect winnings in masks so that relatives do not start whining for money

Although, now many are afraid of the housing crisis, but lotteries are not popular everywhere. So many more factors must come together, as in China, probably. What other factors do you think made the lottery popular in China?
