General Motors has unveiled a futuristic concept of the future electric sports car Chevrolet Corvette, developed by a new British design team from Birmingham. The car is made in the style of a hypercar with references to aviation design - an expressive aerodynamic shape is complemented by a projection display on the windshield for the driver. The doors are designed as a "gull wing".

As stated by GM vice president for global design Michael Simcoe, the concept was the result of creative work involving several studios of the company. The upper part of the body is inspired by iconic models, including the split windshield of the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray. The underside of the car, GM says, is focused on functionality.

The concept features aerodynamic components on the sides that optimize airflow, which the company says makes traditional spoilers and wings redundant. However, for track use, the Corvette could use retractable stabilizers and an aero vectoring system to improve cornering.

The concept was developed by GM's newly created design center in Royal Leamington Spa, headed by veteran automotive designer Julian Thomson. The British specialist has a wealth of professional experience, including work at Ford, Volkswagen and Audi, but the real calling card in his portfolio remains the first-generation Lotus Elise - an example of automotive design recognized as a standard of elegance.

Thomson spent the next two decades at Jaguar, where he held a key position under Ian Callum, and his departure from JLR in 2021, according to insiders, was due to fundamental disagreement with the company's radical course towards the full electrification of the Jaguar model range.

At the moment, the technical characteristics of the concept and the future supercar are not disclosed. General Motors confirms work on an electric version of the Chevrolet Corvette, but the next generation of the model, according to the company, will retain the traditional V8 engine. A fully electric modification, if implemented, will be just one of the options in the lineup.

The British team is also involved in the development of a new GMC concept for Detroit designers, and, judging by the teasers, it will be a spacious futuristic van, potentially intended for camping. The official presentation of the new GMC concept is planned for the end of this year.
