Designer built a mansion from 11 shipping containers with a magnificent interior (17 photos)
Modern technologies and the modern market are two very different things. You are offered something completely different from what you want, although there are plenty of examples around how you can do it differently and a hundred times better. Designer William Brew thought about it and decided to build his dream house according to a new principle.
On the outside, it's just a bunch of old shipping containers, which is what they are, but on the inside, it's a luxurious and inexpensive dream home!
The house was built legally and officially, it is located in Houston and is considered one of the largest such structures in private use.
The containers are placed on top of each other and three in a row, they form a complex three-story structure. Brew took advantage of the fact that the containers themselves are very strong, so they can easily hang over the ground, resting on a couple of beams, and the space underneath them became something like a garage.
The designer got the idea at the beginning of the century, many years ago. He ordered several projects from construction companies, but at that time no one really worked with containers, so he rejected everything and began to build from scratch, on his own.
This building was conceived in 2011, when Brew himself sketched out a model and estimated the construction budget.
The choice of containers as a base was unambiguous. Judge for yourself - they are durable, already assembled into modules, have all the walls, floor and ceiling. An empty container is easy to bring and unload, and then all that remains is to fasten them together and cut out doorways.
The containers are also fire and moisture resistant, they are not afraid of hurricanes, plus they weigh less than a stone structure of the same size. And the price - these are decommissioned containers, they cost as much as scrap metal.
The construction process was long, because most of it was spent on arranging the interior layout and various finishing of the premises. And the dimensions are impressive, the total living area is 230 sq.m. This is not a commercial project at all, on the contrary, Brew was in no hurry and arranged his home with taste. And it turned out to be gorgeous!
