In the USA, a plane had to be turned back because one of the pilots forgot his passport (3 photos)
The crew of a plane flying from Los Angeles to Shanghai had to turn around and land in San Francisco because one of the four pilots forgot to take his passport.
The plane turned around after an hour and a half of flight over the Pacific Ocean. San Francisco Airport was chosen as the landing site because it is the closest hub for United Airlines. Without documents, the pilot did not have the right to enter China, the publication clarified.
The airline told passengers that the flight had been diverted to San Francisco "due to an unexpected crew issue requiring a new crew." While United Airlines was looking for emergency replacement pilots, it gave passengers $15 meal vouchers per person. The flight was able to depart for Shanghai only at 9:01 p.m. and arrived at 12:49 p.m.
The error cost the airline three hours of wasted fuel and the cost of two full crews, as the first crew had to be replaced entirely. In addition, the return flight from Shanghai was also delayed.
