Hail broke through the windshield and broke the nose of the plane during landing (4 photos)
The plane flew through a thunderstorm front that was not visible on weather radar. The front windows of the cockpit are completely covered with cracks.
The Airbus A320, owned by Austrian Airlines, was flying from Mallorca to Vienna when it was hit by heavy hail. The precipitation broke through the windshield and destroyed the nose of the plane. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 9.
The aircraft took off with a slight delay. There was some turbulence during the flight, but, as passengers noted, “nothing special.” However, about half an hour before the planned arrival in Vienna, a strong shock was felt. The Airbus A320 flew into a thunderstorm front.
“The landing was a little more turbulent than usual,” says one passenger.
The pilot reported that the plane's windshield was broken. I had to land at Vienna airport blindly. Passengers, in turn, were able to assess the scale of the problems only after landing. No one was injured as a result of the incident.
As it became known, the pilot gave a distress signal to dispatchers after hail broke the windshield. Flight control confirmed the incident: they explained that the thunderstorm front that the flight encountered on the way to Vienna was not visible on weather radar.
As a result, the hail damaged the plane's two front cabin windows, the nose and some panels, the airline confirmed.
