Last weekend, a tragedy almost happened at the ski resort of Valdesqui, Spain. A boy and his father were riding a chairlift when they slipped off the seat. Grabbing the handrail, the child was left hanging in the air. Thanks to the coordinated actions of bystanders, the boy was not injured.
The rescue operation brought a mat and told the boy to take off his skis. After that, the child jumped into the improvised cushion. Fortunately, the landing was safe.
Skier Pedro Jose Ruiz Tamaral, 47, said he heard cries for help and saw a boy hanging from the chairlift. The man immediately alerted staff.
“The child skied 20 meters before the chairlift was stopped. The man removed the protective padding from the pillars that support the chairlift. It is usually used to prevent people from hitting themselves. They used it as a makeshift cushion. The boy was told to take off his skis and was told how to jump off safely,” Tamaral said.
And in January of this year, again in Spain, dozens of people were injured when a ski lift collapsed from a height of 15 meters. The incident occurred at the Astun ski resort in the heart of the Aragonese Valley.
Five helicopters and a dozen ambulances were sent to the resort to quickly transport the victims to nearby hospitals.
A skier named Oscar told a local TV station: "It looked like the pulley wheel broke or came loose, the cable started to twitch, and every time it happened, we were thrown up. We were lucky to hold on, but there were people in front of us who fell to the ground and got hit in the face and other parts of their bodies."
"It felt like the cable broke, the chairs jumped, and people were thrown out," another witness said.
