One of the largest and busiest airports in the world, London Heathrow, has stopped operating due to a fire at a power substation. The fire occurred last night 1.5 miles (approximately 2.4 km) from the airport in Hayes.
It is reported that a transformer first caught fire at the substation, and then the fire intensified and spread to other equipment. In addition to the airport, thousands of homes in Hayes, Hunslow and nearby areas were left without power. In addition, due to the strong fire, emergency services evacuated 150 people living in the immediate vicinity of the substation.
Currently, 70 firefighters and 10 vehicles are working at the scene of the fire. However, the fire continues to be extinguished.
"The substation is still burning at the moment. Firefighters are working to isolate the electricity, which will then allow them to extinguish the fire with firefighting foam," said the head of the London Fire Brigade, Paul Morgan, to reporters.
Authorities promise that the airport will resume operations by three o'clock in the morning on March 22. At the moment, it is known that the closure of the airport affected at least 1,351 flights, 120 of which were turned back or redirected to other airports during the flight.
The causes of the fire are still unknown. A special commission will begin investigating the incident after the fire is extinguished.
