History is an incredibly fascinating subject, but few people like to study it at school. But in reality, what could be more interesting than revealing secrets, ancient and not so. In this post you will see photos with an interesting history.

1. Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was just a few meters from the finish line, but got confused by the signals and thought he had finished the race

He was followed by Spaniard Ivan Fernandez, who, realizing what was happening, began shouting at the Kenyan to keep running. Mutai did not know Spanish, but understood the athlete by gestures. Thus, Ivan Fernandez pushed Mutai to victory.

2. 4,000-year-old skeletons of a mother and child who tried to protect him from a strong earthquake. The disaster occurred in China in 2000 BC and caused severe flooding. This event is called the “Chinese Pompeii”

3. The feat of world swimming champion Shavarsh Karapetyan

On September 16, 1976, Soviet swimmer Shavarsh Karapetyan went for a morning jog with his brother and coach near the Yerevan reservoir. He was preparing for another competition. At that time, Shavarsh was already a 17-time world champion, 13-time European champion and seven-time USSR champion in underwater swimming. Trolleybus number 15 was passing by the Yerevan reservoir. Literally a few moments later, it flew into the water and began to drown. Karapetyan immediately dived into the reservoir and managed to break the rear window of the trolleybus. Karapetyan was able to pull out 46 people, but only 20 were saved. Cold water and numerous injuries caused by shards of glass sent the brave swimmer to intensive care. And this was not the only feat of the athlete. Ten years later, Karapetyan took an active part in extinguishing a fire in the Sports and Concert Complex in Yerevan, carrying people out of the fire.

4. In 1996, a newborn girl was thrown into a trash can near the city of Calcutta, India. Three stray dogs found her and protected her for almost two days, even trying to feed the baby before she was found by the police

5. In 1912, during the Olympic track and field competitions, American Jim Thorpe had his sneakers stolen

An athlete found a pair of old shoes in a trash can and used them for competitions. He was able to win two Olympic gold medals.

6. In 1996, a female gorilla rushed to save a three-year-old boy who fell into her enclosure at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois

The child climbed a 23-foot wall and fell into the enclosure, breaking his arm and getting a large cut on his face. Gorilla Binti picked the child up, carried him to the service entrance, and handed him over to the humans.

7. This is Margaret Hamilton, a computer scientist. She stands next to the code she created for the software for NASA's Apollo space program

8. Corporal Jackie was a baboon in the South African Army during World War I. He was the official mascot of the 3rd Transvaal Regiment. His owner, Albert Marr, was called up for war and didn't want to leave Jackie at home

Jackie was given an official uniform with a cap, food rations, and a day's pay. The baboon served as a sentry during night shifts, warning of an approaching enemy attack or enemy soldiers moving nearby.

9. In 1990, an improperly installed window on British Airways Flight 5390 failed mid-flight, causing rapid decompression in the cabin

Flight attendant Nigel Ogden entered the cockpit when he heard a loud explosion and saw the pilot being thrown from the plane. A reconstruction image shows Ogden holding the pilot's legs as the co-pilot attempts to descend to a safer altitude. The co-pilot contacted the control tower for an emergency landing, with the crew believing the pilot was already dead. There were also concerns that if the flight attendant let go, his body could collide with the engine, wing or stabilizer of the plane, causing further problems. After 15 minutes of flying with a broken window, the plane landed safely at Southampton Airport. Ogden suffered frostbite to his face, a damaged eye and a dislocated shoulder. The pilot miraculously survived, reporting frostbite and multiple broken arms and legs.

10. In the early 1980s, a NASA scientist named Lonnie Johnson was working on a jet pump project when he accidentally shot a stream of water across the room. Thus, he came up with the perfect water gun
