Newlyweds won the "dream job" competition - they became caretakers of an uninhabited island in Ireland (3 photos)
On the island, the couple will have to douse themselves with water from a mountain stream instead of a shower, and charge their gadgets from a small wind turbine. But the couple is in a positive mood and is ready to "enjoy the sunsets."
A young couple has become caretakers of an uninhabited island in Ireland. A vacancy for seasonal work on Great Blasket Island was opened in 2020, since then 80 thousand applications have been considered, but James Hayes and Camilla Rosenfeld won.
The newlyweds will live in a house among abandoned buildings from the 1950s on a windswept hill overlooking the ocean. For entertainment, they will watch seagulls, seals and sharks.
The couple will also have to live in very modest conditions for the next six months, far from the noise of big cities. For example, instead of a shower, they will have to pour water from a mountain stream, and charge the necessary electronic devices from a small wind turbine.
The young people got married last summer, but they were chosen from among hundreds of other applicants. “I think we’ll enjoy the sunsets, stargazing without light pollution, and relaxing with a book by candlelight,” said Rosenfeld, 26, who has never been to the island before.
In 2020, Irish couple Alice Hayes and Billy O’Connor posted an advert for staff at their cafes and cottages on an island in the Blasket Islands in the west of the country.
To the couple’s surprise, they received a huge number of applications from around the world, including from Iran, Mexico, Finland, and Argentina. “We’ve been overwhelmed with applications,” the couple wrote on Twitter. “When we posted it last year, we were worried we wouldn’t find ANYONE. We got 23,000 applications [when applications opened]. If everyone who applied stayed with us for one night, we would be booked for the next 30 years!"
