If a woman has had less than 11 sexual contacts per year, the risk of mental health problems increases several times.
A study was conducted in the United States proving the benefits of sex for women's mental health. More than 6,000 American women took part in it. The conclusion was simple: sex is necessary for women's physical and mental health. If you refuse intimate life, the risk of falling into depression is extremely high.
The study, the results of which were published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine (TJSM), involved women of different ages - from 20 to 59 years old. Among them were a fair number of ladies with extremely low sexual activity: 1869 (30.84%) reported having sex from 0 to 11 times a year. According to mental health studies, these women had a higher risk of depression than those whose sex life was in full swing.
Many parameters were taken into account, including education level, BMI, health status, bad habits and sleep problems. In all cases, the relationship between the risk of depression and the lack of a normal sex life remained. Interestingly, this relationship was also present in reverse: women already suffering from depression had virtually no sex.
The researchers suggest that doctors should pay attention to the mental health of patients with low frequency of sexual activity and check patients with depression for sexual activity, since these two problems are interconnected, as it turns out.
