Tourists in the south of Argentina managed to film a breathtaking spectacle of the “birth” of a new iceberg. The ship with tourists sailed as close as possible to the glacier.
A huge block broke off from the glacier and began to turn over. This is what an “iceberg breakaway” looks like. The irregular shape of an iceberg often causes it to rock on the water after breaking off. With a high center of gravity, a broken block can turn over, which is what the tourists managed to film.
The flipping of an iceberg when breaking off from an ice floe is extremely dangerous for observers, scientists believe. Depending on the size of the iceberg, its breakaway from the glacier can even cause a tsunami.
