Scientists are concerned about the acceleration of the emergence of a new continent (5 photos)
I have good news for you, literally in a million years a new ocean will appear on the planet.
So, as we all remember (or rather, have long forgotten about it, since it does not directly concern us), in 2005 a crack appeared in the Ethiopian desert. Not a small one, 56 km long. And every year it only continues to increase in size. Now it passes through Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania and half of Ethiopia.
Scientists have studied this crack for a long time and have come to the conclusion that Africa is falling apart. And literally, into two continents. Although the two parts are drifting extremely slowly, American professor Ken McDonald said that this is impressive, given the enormous size of Africa.
If earlier scientists assumed that it would take at least 10 million years for Africa to break up, now, given the speed at which the crack is growing, a complete division would take 1 million years.
In 2018, a chasm also appeared in Kenya.
"What could happen is that the Indian Ocean waters will rush in and flood what is now the East African Rift Valley," MacDonald said.
He also noted that the new ocean could become as deep as the Atlantic if waters continue to flow into the area.
And that would be fine, but it's a shame we won't see it. The most we'll see is more eruptions, and there will be more earthquakes than before.
