Lonely Japanese pensioners commit minor violations to go to jail (3 photos)
Elderly Japanese people have started committing crimes to get into prison. They do this to get free food, medical care, and the social interactions they lack in their everyday lives.
Japanese pensioners are intentionally going to prison to cope with loneliness and poverty. To do this, the elderly commit petty crimes (stealing food, vandalism, etc.). In prison, they receive free food, medical care, and the social interactions they lacked outside because they were left all alone.
In recent years, the number of prisoners over 65 has almost quadrupled. As soon as their sentence ends, they re-offend and return to prison. Some even say they are ready to give up their pensions if it allows them to live in prison permanently.
