Llangerny Yew – One of the Oldest Trees on the Planet with a Mystical History (10 photos + 1 video)
One of the most ancient trees on the planet is shrouded in an old Welsh legend, in which it is closely associated with a spirit that prophesies death.
The Llangernyw Yew is an ancient tree that grows in the small village of Llangernyw in Wales. The tree is estimated to be between 4,000 and 5,000 years old, although dating yew trees is difficult because the core, the main part of the trunk, has been lost over the centuries. Its split trunk appears to be a living portal to the underworld, and on the other side of the gate is a small field of tombstones from the local cemetery.
Additional mystique to the tree comes from its significance in Welsh mythology. According to legend, it is often associated with a spirit known as the Angelistor, or "Angel of Record." Every Halloween, the Angel delivers a prophecy from the altar of a nearby church, predicting the names of parishioners destined to die before the next Halloween. Those wishing to know if their names are on the Angelistor's list gather under the church's east window and listen intently.
Naturally, the spirit of Angelistor speaking from the yew is just an old tale and a tribute to tradition. But it, like the age of the tree, is confirmed by thousand-year-old written evidence of its existence.
